Your first gym visit, without the guesswork

You don’t need to arrive with a training plan memorised. A first visit can simply be a chance to see the space, meet someone and decide whether you want to return.

Book a time when someone can show you around

Find the club’s staffed hours, then ask for a tour or introduction. A gym advertising 24-hour access may only have staff there for part of the day. Tell the team it is your first visit and ask what to bring, where to enter and whether there is a charge. Trial passes can have eligibility conditions, so confirm those before travelling.

Visit when you would normally train

A quiet mid-morning tour may feel very different from an after-work session. If you can, visit during your likely training window. Notice the route from the entrance to the equipment, how easy it is to find staff, and whether the changing area works for your routine. You are checking whether the place feels usable to you, rather than whether it looks impressive.

Ask for an equipment introduction

Ask who can show you how to adjust and use unfamiliar equipment, and whether an induction is included. Find out how to get help during your normal training time, especially if it falls outside staffed hours. An introduction and a paid personal training session may be different services; ask the club to explain what each includes.

Leave with a few clear answers

Before deciding, find out the full membership cost, what is included, how class bookings work and how to end or pause the membership. Ask for the information in writing so you can read it in your own time. You can take a tour and still decide another gym is a better fit.

Take this with you

Your quick checklist

  • Confirm the visit time, entry point and trial conditions.
  • Bring the clothing, towel and drink bottle the club requests.
  • Ask about an induction and how to get help.
  • Take the membership details home before deciding.
